PRACTICE PRODUCTION RESEARCH

Camerawork
A point-of-view/medium shot is used during the opening of the film, when Alfie gets out of his car and looks directly at the camera, the shot itself is a medium shot but Alfie literally talks to the audience, giving an impression that the audience are in the position of another character hence why it could be viewed as a POV shot. This is used to engage and involve the audience and also entice them to continue watching the rest of the film. Overall there is little variation in terms of camera shots in the opening to this film, with the long-shot being the most frequent one as it allows all the characters to be in one shot and there is no cutting between various camera shots, this adds to the realistic feel to the film and makes everything feel natural and believable
Mis-en-scene
The opening of the film is set in a built up city area under dullish grey sky's, the film also focuses on a particular untidy and rough feel, which in itself gives the film that dull and unorthadox feel. Alfie himself is smartly dressed wearing a suit, whilst his female companion is also dressed appropriately, the costumes themselves give a sense of the time period and also the choice of car which has old-
fashioned connotations for an audience of this day and age. The film also features dogs in the opening, maybe used to emphasis the rough feel of the location and make it more realistic.
Sound
The non-diegetic sound of music begins to play before the film actually starts, the sound itself is very jazzy and classical giving an impresion of the old fashioned time period during which the film was made. A voiceover is used when Alfie and the woman are in the car and engaging in dialogue, the fact that the audience can't see the characters but can hear them, creates a comediac and enjoyable aspect to the film. Alfie's accent is one that could be associated with a Londoner, using words such as "geezer," this hints to the audience that the film is based in the capital. Apart from the non-diegetic music played at the start, very little artificial sound is used, in an attempt to preserve the realistic feel of the film, this idea of keeping everything realistic and simple is a recurring theme throughout the film's opening.
Editing
The film itself opens with an establishing shot which pans around an un-known city during the evening, this shot gives sense of movement and also establishes where the film is based, enabling the audience to understand the opening. The film is also simplistic in terms of editing during the opening, very little editing is actually visible giving a very basic feel to the film
